Sometime after the Nox were banished deep underground and the Lands Between forgot them, someone commissioned a company of their own slaves, marked with the inverted hawk, a crest turned upside-down, perhaps, to denote ownership-without-honour, and sent them down to map the underground city's silent ruins. Most never returned. When the band's last embers gave out in their long search, they burned the bones of their own dead, and won the cold ghostflame at the cost of sealing their fate as dwellers of the underground for all eternity.

'The inverted hawk is the emblem of the company of slaves ordered to explore the Eternal City.' The Inverted Hawk Heater Shield records the inversion in the canon's quietest typography: a hawk normally upright, here flipped, shorthand for a man whose bird-of-arms cannot fly. The slaves of the Company carried it for the same reason a galley-slave wears a chain: to remember whose property they are. Their ghosts now wander the Siofra River with bows still in hand, ghostflame arrows nocked, taking aim at any Tarnished who looks like the master who sent them down. The canon's least-named company is also one of its most precise indictments.
