The Tarnished
"And one other. Whom grace would again bless. A Tarnished of no renown."
Intro narration, the unexpected one
The Tarnished are former subjects of the Golden Order who were stripped of grace and exiled from the Lands Between by Marika, forced on the Long March alongside Godfrey. Their defining characteristic: their grace "turned cold," losing its golden glow, and they were cast out to wander beyond the Fog Sea. Without grace, they also lost the rebirth cycle, they could die permanently in the outer world. The opening narration establishes their return: when the Elden Ring was shattered and the Greater Will went silent, the guidance of grace was re-extended to the Tarnished, calling them back across the Sea of Fog. Unlike grace-bearing subjects of the Lands Between, Tarnished who return after the Shattering can be reborn at Sites of Grace, a property that made them uniquely suited to the dangerous task of challenging demigods. The reason Marika exiled the Tarnished is explicitly tied to Godfrey: she wanted them to grow through adversity, to become hardened champions capable of one day returning to restore the Elden Ring. The Tarnished who return are described as Maidenless (without a Finger Maiden to channel runes into strength) until they find Melina. The Two Fingers and Finger Readers guide the Tarnished toward becoming Elden Lord, the purpose they were recalled for.

Remembrance of Hoarah LouxAlternatively, it can be used to gain a great bounty of runes. When Godfrey, first Elden Lord was robbed of his grace, becoming Tarnished, he took with him his kinfolk and left the Lands Between. After the Long March of the Tarnished came to an end, Godfrey divested himself of kingship, becoming a simple warrior once more.
Old Albus (Dialogue)Heh heh... Ah, if it isn't a Tarnished warrior. Are you travelling my way? I'm heading to the festival at Redmane Castle, on the southern edge of the scarlet rot-blighted Caelid Wilds. I, Iron Fist Alexander, do hereby vow to unflinchingly brave this ordeal. I am the warrior jar, Iron Fist Alexander. The pleasure is mine. Would you mind if I called you lord? I heard that you and the other Tarnished seek the throne of the Elden Lord. Well, I know that you will be the one, and you'd make just the manner of kind-hearted lord that I'd wish for. So, please, if you would.

Axe of GodfreyWeapon of Godfrey, Elden Lord. It was broken in a battle fought as leader of the Tarnished during the Long March. This weapon is symbolic of Godfrey's vow to conduct himself as a lord, later becoming an emblem of the golden lineage. In the days of the past, a crown was warranted with strength.
