From the Crucible to the Tarnished's choice
The Ages of the Lands Between
Before the Erdtree there was the Crucible, the primal stew of mixed forms ruled in turn by Dragonlord Placidusax in an age the Lands Between have forgotten how to date. Then came the Greater Will and Marika : the Erdtree was raised, the Golden Order codified, the Numen lineage crowned. Marika and Godfrey waged the Wars against the Giants, the Storm Lords, and the dragons; the Crucible was outlawed. Then came Marika's reign proper, the demigods born and ranked, and Godfrey's eventual exile across the Sea of Fog as the first Tarnished.
The Night of the Black Knives broke the long peace : Godwyn's soul died, Marika sank into grief, and she struck the Elden Ring with her own hammer. The Shattering followed, demigod against demigod for the throne. Maliketh's death unbound the Rune of Death; the Erdtree burned and Leyndell became the Ashen Capital. The Tarnished, unexpected and unrenowned, climbed past the Beast and Marika herself to the throne. The Age that follows is whichever the Tarnished chooses : Fracture, Order, Stars, Duskborn, Frenzied Flame, or Despair.
Elden Ring, O, Elden Ring. Shaper of life, arbiter of fate. Lord of the very stars above. Tarnished warrior, spurned by the grace of gold. Seek that which hath been lost to thee. Across the Sea of Fog, to the Lands Between. Seek the Elden Ring!
The Great Runes you receive by defeating shardbearers have lost their beneficial power. However, their power can be restored at Divine Towers throughout the Lands Between.
Our seed will look back upon us, and recall. An Age of Fracture.
