The Crucible

Primordial state of life, before the Erdtree pruned its forms

The Crucible is what the Erdtree was before Marika and the Greater Will reformed it. It is the primal stew from which life first bloomed in the Lands Between: a state in which every form was permitted, where men had horns and beasts spoke, where flesh and stone and tree mingled without distinction. The Crucible Knights, the surviving order who fought beside Godfrey, still wear armor shaped to their old half-monstrous bodies; their weapons emit the Crucible's tail-flick or horn-charge as Aspects, fragments of the older self the Erdtree's grace tried to subtract.

Marika's Golden Order outlawed the Crucible's mixing. The Misbegotten, the Omens, the Albinaurics, every kind whose body retains the Crucible's older lattice, were declared imperfect and either enslaved, locked away, or hunted. The hornsent of the Realm of Shadow worshipped a horned god of the Crucible whose name no Erdtree priest will speak. To find an Aspect of the Crucible incantation is to glimpse what life looked like before grace decided what life ought to be.
