The Greater Will and the Two Fingers

External Cosmic Deity · Masters of Order

"The Greater Will has not abandoned the realm, nor the life that inhabits it. So it is that the Tarnished are guided by grace."

Enia, on the Will's silence

The Greater Will is a god external to the Lands Between, a cosmic entity that decided to impose Order upon the Lands Between through Marika. It sent the Elden Beast (its physical beast-vassal) and the Two Fingers (its communication intermediaries) to establish this Order. The Two Fingers are large digitigrade white fingers that transmit the Greater Will's messages; Finger Readers (like Enia) interpret them for mortals. The Greater Will designates Empyreans, beings capable of becoming the next god, through the Two Fingers. The Two Fingers were "corrupted" or went silent after the Shattering according to Varré: "The words of the Two Fingers can no longer be trusted. Corrupted, their guidance, tainted." Gideon Ofnir believes the same. The Two Fingers were also corrupted by the Frenzied Flame and fell silent, creating the "guidance vacuum" that Tarnished must fill. The Baleful Shadows are the Greater Will's assassins, sent through the Two Fingers to eliminate recalcitrant Empyreans (Ranni was their target). Ranni resisted and ended their contract by killing her Empyrean body. The Fingerslayer Blade (Eternal Cities artifact) is a weapon capable of killing a Two Fingers entity, its existence reveals that beings have previously wanted to, or succeeded in, resisting the Greater Will.

Alternatively, it can be used to gain a great bounty of runes. It was the vassal beast of the Greater Will and living incarnation of the concept of Order.

NPC DialogueFinger Reader Enia (Dialogue)
The Fingers remain still. Shaken by this turn of events, they are busy consulting the Greater Will. When they are finished, the Fingers will again offer their guidance. But thousands, if not tens of thousands, of moons must first pass. The Fingers would never permit it. Nor would the Greater Will. ... ... But here we are... The Fingers, dormant, severing our link to the Greater Will. The realm, and all life, in ruins. Impossible events transpire, beyond the ken of the Fingers. How long will it be, I wonder... Before the Tarnished tire of obeisance to the Two Fingers? ... This way, Tarnished. May I have a word? Of the demigods, only I, Miquella, and Malenia could claim that title. Each of us was chosen by our own Two Fingers, as a candidate to succeed Queen Marika, to become the new god of the coming age. But I would not acquiesce to the Two Fingers. I stole the Rune of Death, slew mine own Empyrean flesh, casting it away. I would not be controlled by that thing. The Two Fingers and I have been cursing each other ever since... And the Baleful Shadows...are their assassins. Oh, again we cross paths. Which is when I received Blaidd. In the form of a vassal tailored for an Empyrean. I turned my back on the Two Fingers and we have each been cursing the other since. The Baleful Shadows...are their assassins. Even when I turned my back upon the Two Fingers. Blaidd remained my loyal ally. Heh. Though he was created a vassal for an Empyrean, He was a colossal failure, on the part of the Two Fingers. Blaidd, and Iji both... Art willing to give too much to me. O Shadow, thou'rt the last. Tell the Two Fingers, That Ranni the Witch cometh, to rend thy flesh. With a fateful wound, ne'er to heal. Beautifully fought.
NPC DialoguePreceptor Seluvis (Dialogue)

That I belong to the Volcano Manor. I always hated the gibberish about lost grace and the laughable Two Fingers. I thought I could lend a hand in unmasking the charade. Not to mention Tanith has always made me curious. Then came fractures, and births, and souls. But the Greater Will made a mistake. Torment, despair, affliction. Every sin, every curse.

NPC DialogueRecusant Bernahl (Dialogue)

And with everything in hand, the time has come to rise, against the Erdtree. O Greater Will, hear my voice. I am the recusant Bernahl, inheritor of my brother's will, and you will fall to my blade. We refuse to become your pawns.

WeaponFingerslayer Blade

This blood-drenched fetish is proof of the high treason committed by the Eternal City and symbolizes its downfall. Cannot be wielded by those without a fate, but is said to be able to harm the Greater Will and its vassals.
