The Realm of Shadow lies beside the Lands Between, separated from it by a great pall the Erdtree casts over the world. Its sky is dimmed by the Scadutree, the Erdtree's twin or shadow, whose roots feed on a different soil and whose blessing strengthens those who climb. Long before Marika's reign, this land was the seat of the hornsent: a horned people of inquisitorial scholarship, who built spiral towers and bound infants into jars in pursuit of holy revelation. They worshipped a Crucible that was older than gold.

Marika came from this realm, and the war Messmer waged here was the war of her own beginnings: she had been hornsent once, or near enough, and the inquisition had taken her family. Her crusade through Messmer was both genocide and revenge, after which the realm was sealed by the Erdtree's shadow so that no record of it might reach the new age. The Tarnished who follows Miquella's path through the Gate of Divinity walks a continent that the Lands Between were not meant to remember.
