The Scadutree is the dark twin of the Erdtree, a great tree that grows somewhere in the Realm of Shadow whose grace is cast not as light but as shadow, and whose sap flows in directions Erdtree-grace cannot. The DLC's Map: Scadu Altus description records the geographical premise : the plateau is 'named after its counterpart in the realm of the Erdtree.' What the Erdtree did for the Lands Between, the Scadutree does for the Land of Shadow : every demigod's remembrance the Tarnished claims in the DLC is 'hewn into the Scadutree' rather than into the Erdtree. The Realm of Shadow has its own grace, its own anchor, its own afterlife.
The Scadutree's most distinctive offering to the Tarnished is the Scadutree Blessing, an FP-distinct empowerment that scales independently of the Tarnished's runes. The About the Scadutree Blessing key item describes it : 'Scadutree Fragments can be found across the realm of shadow. The Scadutree Blessing bolsters the recipient's abilities to deal and negate damage, but has no influence outside the realm of shadow.' The two halves of that line, bolsters within Shadow, no influence outside, are the canon's quietest argument that the Realm of Shadow runs on a parallel grace-economy, not on a derivative of the Erdtree's. The Furnace Golems' chest-cavities pool the Scadutree's scattered sap ; the Cracked Tears the Tarnished gathers there are the canon's most direct sample of a shadow-grace the Greater Will did not authorise. When the Scadutree crumbles, as the Scadutree Fragment description warns, the Realm of Shadow's grace-system fails first.
