Messmer the Impaler

Erased son of Marika, sword of the basilisk's gaze

"Those stripped of the Grace of Gold shall all meet death. In the embrace of Messmer's flame."

Battle introduction

"Mother... Marika... A curse... upon thee..."

Defeat

Messmer was the eldest son of Queen Marika by an unrecorded father, a demigod whose name was struck from every chronicle of Leyndell after the war that earned him his title. The Greater Will gave him a black serpent as a familiar, an Outer presence that lived behind his left eye, and the gift of a flame which the Erdtree's grace could not extinguish. Marika dispatched him to the Realm of Shadow at the head of an army with one command : annihilate the hornsent and their reverence of the older horned gods, that no rival worship might survive into the new age.

Messmer carried out his crusade and was then sealed inside the Land of Shadow with his soldiers, his existence hidden from the Lands Between. His armies of fire knights, basilisk soldiers, and the impaling spears that gave him his name still patrol the ruins of Belurat and the Specimen Storehouse. To meet him is to meet the deepest shame of the Erdtree's foundation: a child Marika sent away because his work was complete, and would have damned her had it ever been told.
