The Divine Beasts are the gods of the Hornsent, vast horned creatures, lions and birds and stranger forms, whose bodies were the sky's own messengers in the time before the Erdtree. The Hornsent built their tower of Belurat around the cult of these beasts ; the lion dance performed at the great tower festival was, in the Enraged Divine Beast description, 'the crazed, cavorting dance of the divine beast conducted at the tower festival. Divine beasts are messengers of the heavens, and their rage mirrors the tumult of the skies, of which storms are the pinnacle.' The Hornsent who excelled at invocation became sculpted keepers, granted the honor of wearing the divine beast's mask and dancing the dance.

What followed is the canon's most pitiless line. The Divine Beast Tornado incantation description preserves it : 'The majority of divine beasts were gored and hung upon Messmer's spears, then burned in his flame. Those who witnessed the deed likened it to a funeral pyre for the tower itself.' The Dancing Lion the Tarnished fights at Belurat is one of the last surviving forms, a great spirit-puppet operated by two sculpted keepers who never abandoned the dance. The Divine Beast Frost Stomp and Divine Beast Tornado the Tarnished can wield are the dance's last fragments : a stomp meant to call winter, a twist meant to call storm.
