Leda's tower-of-shadow message
Enir-Ilim is the highest place in the Realm of Shadow, a tower at the world's edge whose top contains the Gate of Divinity, the threshold any Empyrean must cross to ascend to godhood. The Tower of Shadow Message, left by Needle Knight Leda for her companions, names what's there in plain terms : 'The Gate of Divinity lies in the tower sealed by shadow. That is surely where Kind Miquella is headed. We are no Empyreans, but we must locate the path that will lead us there.' Miquella, who sloughed off everything in himself except the will to ascend, is climbing the tower throughout the DLC ; the Tarnished follows.
What seals the tower is the Sealing Tree at Rauh, the great living lock that Marika and her father-Outer-God installed to ensure no later Empyrean would reach Enir-Ilim's gate without her permission. The Castle Cross Message preserves Leda's understanding of the seal : 'Kind Miquella seeks the tower sealed by shadow, and the Gate of Divinity found there. If we are to reach him, we must burn the tree that seals the path. And for that we require a flame.' The flame, in the canon's quiet circular irony, can only be Messmer's, the same kindling that burned in Messmer's body when he conducted the original cleansing crusade. The Tarnished arrives at Enir-Ilim's summit only after killing Messmer, harvesting his Kindling, burning the Sealing Tree, and following Miquella's slow ascent up the tower's spiral. The Promised Consort duel happens at the Gate.

Messmer's KindlingThe kindling that burned inside Messmer the Impaler. A dark thing, eaten away at by a wicked serpent. Burns the sealing tree said to be found at the old Rauh ruins.
