Enir-Ilim is the name the place wears on screen. Needle Knight Leda's Tower of Shadow Message, left for her companions, names what is up there: 'The Gate of Divinity lies in the tower sealed by shadow. That is surely where Kind Miquella is headed. We are no Empyreans, but we must locate the path that will lead us there.' Its position reaches us as bearings: 'The spiral tower of the hornsent lies to the northwest' (Map: Gravesite Plain), and 'To the southwest is the Church of the Bud, overlooking the tower of shadow' (Map: Rauh Ruins). Miquella's Great Rune says what he spent to get there: he 'set off for the tower enshrouded by shadow, abandoning everything', down to 'his golden flesh, his blinding strength, even his fate', in order to 'be reborn as a new god'. He climbs; the Tarnished follows.

What seals the tower is a tree, and the game does not say who planted it. The Castle Cross Message keeps Leda's account of the obstacle: 'Kind Miquella seeks the tower sealed by shadow, and the Gate of Divinity found there. If we are to reach him, we must burn the tree that seals the path. And for that we require a flame.' Dryleaf Dane's Ancient Ruins Cross Message names whose flame: 'We've found the sealing tree just ahead. But if we are to burn it, we need the proper kindling. That of Sir Messmer.' Leda passes on the address: 'The sealing tree is in the ancient ruins of Rauh. It lies beyond the high bridge leading from the first floor of the storehouse.' The circularity belongs to the game: the horned warriors are 'keepers of the tower', the Remembrance of the Dancing Lion recalls the day 'when the Impaler's army assailed the tower', and the fire that unseals the path is the kindling that 'burned inside Messmer the Impaler'. The Secret Rite Scroll describes 'the secret rite of the divine gateway said to be found at the tower enshrouded by shadow', and sets its terms: 'A lord will usher in a god's return, and the lord's soul will require a vessel.' Per the Young Lion's Armor, that lord had been called long before: when Malenia let the rotflower blossom in Aeonia, 'Radahn heard a murmur in his ear', 'Miquella awaits thee, O promised consort.'
