The Furnace Golems are the great walking pyres that stride across the Land of Shadow, bronze giants with stone-mask faces and a fire bowl set into their backs, into which an inquisitor would once cast the sentenced. Their faces, more than anything else, are the canon's clearest tell about what they are. The Furnace Visage flavour text gives the doctrinal basis : 'A stone mask surrounded by curled horns, depicting the fell god of fire that haunts the sagas of the hornsent.' The Furnace Golems are Hornsent constructions, not Erdtree ones, old engines from the age before Marika rose, when the Hornsent's own theology of cleansing was burning what could not be redeemed.

Their fire is doctrinal. The Hefty Furnace Pot description preserves the doctrine without softening : 'The furnace's flame burns away both body and soul. When impurity is thus expunged, one calls it cleansing.' This is the same theology Messmer would later inherit and turn against the Hornsent themselves : burn until what remains is pure. The Furnace Golems still walk because Messmer, encountering them, did not destroy them, he turned them on their makers. Their fire-bowls are now fed by the same Erdtree-derived sap that pools inside their bronze chests, drawn out through Cracked Tears that the Tarnished gathers across the realm. The cleanser, as the canon's quiet irony goes, has been put to clean its inventors.
