Bayle the Dread

Dragon of dragons, the storm that broke Placidusax

"On the throbbing heart of the oldest, vilest dragon of them all. There you will find Bayle, the oldest, and vilest, of all dragons. Scale the jagged peak. Face Bayle the Dread. And when you do, slay him in mine stead!"

Igon's vow at the Jagged Peak

Bayle was once the lieutenant of Dragonlord Placidusax, in the age before the Erdtree, when ancient dragons ruled the heavens. He turned upon his lord, tore off one of Placidusax's heads, and was scourged in turn by lightning that left him a ruin of fused scales and weeping wounds. He retreated to the Jagged Peak in the Land of Shadow, where he remains: enormous, hateful, brooding upon the storm of red lightning that is now his only weapon. The other ancient dragons followed him into exile, and there they wait still.

Igon, the only known dragon hunter to have survived a meeting with Bayle and to have continued hunting him, leaves his oath written on every scrap of parchment along the path to the peak. The Tarnished who reaches the summit can hear Igon's voice through the mist, raging an entire questline's worth of hatred at the dragon he has hunted for centuries. Bayle's flame lightning, when harvested as an incantation, still carries the dread of his wound: it scars whatever it touches.
