"That will be all. Thou didst me good service, Serosh. I have given thee courtesy enough. Now I fight as Hoarah Loux! Warrior!"
Phase 2, Hoarah Loux
Godfrey was the first mortal warrior chosen by Marika as Elden Lord, a warchief of the Badlands, leader of his clan, who took the war name Hoarah Loux. His fighting spirit was so ferocious that Marika had him accept Serosh, a spirit of leisure and civility grafted onto his back, to tame his warrior's savagery and render him fit to reign with dignity. Together, they founded the Age of the Erdtree. His campaigns were legendary: the War against the Giants (alongside Marika, confining the Flame of Ruin), the Siege of Castle Morne ("Lord Godfrey, at the end of his campaigns, his armies of gold undefeated and untamed"), and the territorial establishment of the Golden Order.
When the last great war was won, Marika deliberately stripped him of his grace and exiled him with his Tarnished warriors, forcing the Long March of the Tarnished out of the Lands Between. The theoretical explanation: Marika did not want static peace; she wanted the Tarnished to grow through adversity to become worthy champions. Stripped of grace, Godfrey shed his royalty and returned to being simply Hoarah Loux, the warrior. He fathered descendants during this exile. At his final return to Leyndell in the boss fight, he acknowledges Morgott: "Morgott, thou'st fought long and hard." He then removes Serosh ("Thou'st given me enough leisure, Serosh") and reveals Hoarah Loux, the original bestial fighter. His death carries total warrior satisfaction: he finally finds a worthy opponent. The Godfrey Icon Talisman speeds up charged skills, reflecting his mastery of warfare beyond brute force.
