As proof, the sword was imbued with the cold of his very soul.' Iji is the giant smith of Caria : enormous, weathered, slow of speech, sworn from before the Shattering to House Caria. He is one of Ranni's three core retainers, the others are Blaidd the Half-Wolf and Seluvis the Preceptor, and the only one whose questline runs cleanly. He sits on a cliff above the Liurnia lake, near the Three Sisters region, and forges or repairs whatever the Tarnished brings. He is the smith who reforged Blaidd's Royal Greatsword with cold ; the smith who tells the Tarnished, when they visit, the next safe step on Ranni's questline.

Iji's tragedy is the canon's most quietly written : he is killed late in Ranni's questline by a roving band of Black Knife Assassins, the same lineage who killed Godwyn. He dies on his cliff, slumped against his stone hammer, with no boss-fight, no remembrance, no Spirit Ash to summon. He simply isn't there one day. The Tarnished arrives at his post and finds the place empty except for the cliff and the cold lake. Ranni does not mention it. Iji's death is the canon's quietest demonstration that even successful questlines cost retainers their lives. Some questlines are completed precisely because someone you trusted to be there isn't there anymore.
