Iji is the giant smith of Caria: enormous, weathered, slow of speech, sworn from before the Shattering to House Caria, War Counselor in title, blacksmith in practice. He is one of Ranni's core retainers alongside Blaidd the Half-Wolf and Seluvis the Preceptor. He sits on the road above the Liurnia lake, near the Three Sisters, smithing for whoever Ranni trusts; the Frozen Needle is his signed work, ice made into a blade that remakes itself. He is also the one who tells the Tarnished, visit after visit, the next safe step on Ranni's path.

As proof, the sword was imbued with a cold magic at the moment the oath was sworn.' Iji's tragedy is the canon's most quietly written: late in Ranni's questline he is simply found dead at his post, his giant body slumped where he always stood, no boss-fight, no remembrance, and no killer the game ever names. The Tarnished takes from him his bell bearing and the Mirrorhelm he sold, the mirrored helm said to ward off the eyes of divine envoys, a hint, never a confession, of what the old giant feared was coming for his household.
