This is where the vulgar militia serve, as untiring, unsung watchkeepers.' The Vulgar Militia are the canon's institutional shame. They are the small, ill-favoured warriors the Lands Between scorned during the era of demigod war ; they organised themselves into a militia for survival rather than oath, and the Order assigned them to watch the battlefields the Order itself wished to forget. Mt. Gelmir's lava-blasted southern slopes, Caelid's rot-blanked clearings, the Forbidden Lands of the Mountaintops, all are theirs by default of nobody else accepting the post.

The saw is said to also be used to cut up bodies to feed the militia, but there are no firsthand witnesses to confirm the dire rumor.' The canonical detail is the saw. Their weapon is a long-hafted serrated blade designed for industrial harvesting of corpses ; the rumour, never confirmed, is that they eat what they harvest. The Order's silence about the rumour is its own kind of confirmation. The militia's ghost-form, the Vulgar Militia Spirit Ash, fights the Tarnished's battles the same way they fought the Order's : in lines of three, brutal, blood-loss-inflicting, asking nothing about who they are killing because no one ever told them.
