The Night of the Black Knives

The assassins that carried out the deeds of the Night of the Black Knives were all women, and rumored to be Numen.' The Night of the Black Knives is the first crack in the Erdtree's wall. Ranni, the Carian princess, conspired with her sister Marika's hidden faction, Numen women, of Marika's own pre-Erdtree ancestry, to steal a fragment of the Rune of Death from Maliketh, the Black Blade who carried it under Marika's seal. They forged the fragments into seven black knives. Each knife carried the power to slay a demigod ; the canon's plot is, in shape, a series of consequences cascading from this theft.

Godwyn the Golden, Marika's eldest and most beloved son, was killed in his sleep. Ranni, the same night, killed her own physical body in protest of what her destiny had become, abandoning the Two Fingers' control. But Death's fragment, having been forged into a weapon, did not perform its office cleanly. Godwyn's body died ; his soul did not. He became the first to die the Death of Souls. Ranni died the body. The two halves of Death entwined inside the Erdtree itself, growing into the silent calamity that follows : Those Who Live in Death.
