The mask was forced on him at his conviction, and he never removed it. Most of the realm reads the mask as a threat; Boggart had begun to read it the same way, and the canonical detail is the gentlest indictment of self: the mask was also a mirror of his emptiness.

Later he moves his stall to the outer moat of Leyndell to hawk crab, and confides that he once shared a gaol with the Dung Eater and watched the madman defile the corpse of his friend. The Dung Eater finds him there, curses him, and Boggart, dreading the curse more than death, begs the Tarnished to end him: 'I don't wanna get cursed. Just let me die...' The Tarnished finds the bell-bearing upon his perished flesh and may offer it to the Twin Maiden Husks; the blackguard's little trade outlives him.
