His title is not one of conquest but of imitation : he sought to be a wolf, and wolves, in the older creeds of the Lands Between, are the chosen vassals of Empyreans. Blaidd the Half-Wolf was made a wolf to serve Ranni ; Vargram, born no such thing, tried to become one by will alone.

Friendship was the last thing the new age forgave.
