The Lordsworn

The lord-bound regulars whose swords blackened in the long Shattering

'Well-crafted straight sword with an illustrious design, wielded by regulars of a lord's army. Though blackened and damaged by years of use, it appears to have otherwise been kept in a serviceable condition, despite the soldiers having long since perished.' The Lordsworn are the ordinary soldiers of the Lands Between : those who took the lord's oath and went to war as Marika's general infantry. They are not knights, they have no glintstone, no mounts, no privileged training. They are sword-and-shield regulars who carried the demigods' standards into Caelid, into the Mountaintops, into Aeonia, and who died in such numbers that the canon names them only in reference to their armour, never as individuals. Their commonplace Lordsworn's Greatsword is one of the first weapons a Tarnished picks up.

'Wooden tower shield. Lightweight for a greatshield and easy to handle. Commonly used in the Shattering. Greatshields boast high damage negation and guard capacity, making enemy attacks easy to repel.' The Shattering's body count fell almost entirely on the Lordsworn. Demigods do not die ; they only break apart. Knights die rarely, with names. Lordsworn die in lines, six abreast, behind a tower shield. The Bell-Bearings sold by the Twin Maiden Husks include their bolts and shields because so many were left on so many fields that the residue is itself an economy. The Tarnished benefits, in armour and currency, from the dead of the Shattering. The Lordsworn's ghosts, where they appear as Spirit Ashes, fight defensively still : a tower shield up, a quiet voice waiting for a command from a captain who never returned from the same battle.
