The Numen

Marika's hidden race, born outside the Lands Between

'Stone hammer made in the lands of the Numen, outside the Lands Between. The tool with which Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring and Radagon attempted to repair it. The hammer partially broke upon shattering the Ring, becoming splintered with shards.' The Numen are the canon's hidden race : an ancient humanoid people from across the Sea of Fog, distinct from the Lands Between's Tarnished, demigods, and beasts. Their physical traits are subtle but consistent : taller, with horns concealed under hair, and an inheritance of an old and grave silence. Marika is Numen. Radagon, Marika's male half, was Numen. Ranni's adult body, the body she put on after killing her own flesh on the Night of the Black Knives, is Numen. The Black Knife Assassins were all Numen women.

'Armor used by the Black Knife Assassins. Crafted with scale armor that makes no sound. The assassins that carried out the deeds of the Night of the Black Knives were all women, and rumored to be Numen who had close ties with Marika herself.' The canon is careful never to explain how the Numen came to the Lands Between, what they were before they arrived, or what religion they keep. Their hammer, Marika's Hammer, was the tool she used to shatter the Elden Ring after Godwyn's death. It is the only artefact in the canon that is identified as Numen-made and that survives. Everything else of their culture has been absorbed, hidden, or forgotten. The Lands Between's grace was never given to Numen by birthright. Marika, becoming god, built it for them.

Scale armor used by the Black Knife Assassins, forged to make no sound. Traces of power yet remain in its concealing veil, which muffles the sound of footsteps.
