The Tarnished does not pick it up, they receive it from Tanith, lady of the Volcano Manor, after Rya's invitation has been honoured and the Tarnished has formally entered the Manor's hunt-confraternity. The finger is snake-scaled, the canonical mark of the lord of the Manor, who is Praetor Rykard, the demigod-serpent. To carry the finger is to be Rykard's family.

The Tarnished receives Red Letters naming specific quarry, Old Knight Istvan, Juno Hoslow, Great Horned Tragoth, and uses the Recusant Finger to invade those Tarnished's worlds. Each invasion is canonically a serpent-marked summons of family vengeance. The Manor's whole social architecture, letters, fingers, hunts, is the canon's most thoroughly routinised murder-club.
