The Silver Tears

Eternal City's failed lord-experiment, a quicksilver that imitates whatever it touches

'A hardened husk shed by a formless life form known as the Silver Tear, found in and around the Eternal City. Material used for crafting items. The Silver Tear makes mockery of life, reborn again and again into imitation. Perhaps, one day, it will be reborn a lord...' The Silver Tears are the Nox's longest-running experiment. After the Greater Will broke their cities, the Nox set themselves the project of forging their own god, a Lord of Night whom they could anoint without the Two Fingers' assent. The Silver Tear is what they made: an intelligent quicksilver that flows formless until it touches a body it can imitate. Its imitations are mortally accurate. Its lifespan, in any single form, is brief.

'Mask fashioned from the corpse of a formless Silver Tear, supported by its hardened, shed husk. Greatly increases arcane to the detriment of physical attack power. To imitate the imitator is a cunning play indeed.' The lineage's grandest success is the Mimic Tear, the Spirit Ash that copies the Tarnished themselves. The Tarnished may carry a quicksilver-copy of their own body into every fight ; the canonical detail is that the imitation is identical except in one regard, its will is its own. The Silver Tear cannot be commanded by the original it copies. The Nox's project of forging a god has, in the Mimic Tear's small flame, succeeded just enough to be terrifying : a Tarnished who looks at the Mimic looks at a self that has refused all instruction.
