▣ CORRUPTIONDeathroot
The black-bark seepage of Godwyn's incomplete death, climbing back into the Erdtree

Deathroot
'Claw-marked stone eye received from Gurranq, Beast Clergyman. It is said to tremble when near Deathroot. The murky violet iris writhes as if alive. I am not sated... Feed me more...Death...' Deathroot is the visible substance of Godwyn the Golden's unfinished death. When the Black Knife's Death-fragment killed Godwyn's soul but not his body, the body, buried beneath the Erdtree, began to sprout. What it sprouts is Deathroot : black, gnarled, lichen-textured bark that climbs the Erdtree's roots from the inside, surfaces in the catacombs, and corrupts everything it touches into Those Who Live in Death. The Erdtree's golden order has no answer for Deathroot. It is, by the time of the Tarnished, growing faster than any priest can prune.
'Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell. Use to summon the spirit of a skeletal bandit. This is the spirit of a bandit who lives in Death, and will continue to rise again until properly finished off. After the night of the plot, Deathroot escaped Maliketh's containment.' Deathroot is harvested in the catacombs and brought to Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman, Maliketh's priestly half, who eats each one. He cannot help it ; his entire being was consecrated to suppressing Death, and in his isolation at the Bestial Sanctum he can no longer keep the office without ingestion. The Tarnished feeding him Deathroot is a quiet ritual of triage : every piece eaten is a piece that won't sprout further corruption. By the eighth root Gurranq cracks and attacks ; the Tarnished must beat him back, after which he gives Beast's Roar and slumps once more.
