Gurranq, Beast Clergyman

Maliketh's older self, in chains at the Bestial Sanctum

Gurranq, Beast Clergyman, is the figure the Tarnished meets at the Bestial Sanctum on the Dragonbarrow plateau in Caelid, a chained wolf-formed priest who teaches bestial incantations in exchange for the Deathroot the hunter D harvests across the Lands Between. The Stone of Gurranq incantation gives the canon's most explicit identification : 'Long ago, Gurranq was a beast of such terrifying ferocity that his former name meant Death of the Demigods.' Gurranq is, in other words, an earlier incarnation of Maliketh, the Black Blade, Marika's chained shadow, in his pre-Erdtree form, when he was still the order's executioner-against-demigods rather than the Beast of Destined Death.

His present situation is a hunger he cannot satisfy. The Beast Eye, the relic he gives the Tarnished, preserves his litany : 'It is said to tremble when near Deathroot. The murky violet iris writhes as if alive. "I am not sated... Feed me more... Death..."' Gurranq feeds on Deathroot, the corpse-bloom that grew through the Erdtree's underground network after Godwyn's body was struck on the Night of the Plot. Each Deathroot the Tarnished delivers calms him for a few exchanges, then the hunger returns. The Bestial Sling and Stone of Gurranq he teaches are, the Sling text states, 'in the time before the Erdtree, stones were the first weapons of the beasts who had gained intelligence', instructions from an order older than the Greater Will, surviving inside Marika's own chained executioner.
