Elemer of the Briar, Bell Bearing Hunter
"The winding, rusted iron briars are a mark of the guilty, and typically indicate a sentence of death. Elemer murdered numerous instructors and merchants, and was known as the Bell Bearing Hunter."
From the Briar Armor description
Elemer of the Briar is the canon's most thoroughly attested Bell Bearing Hunter, the figure who appears at certain merchant-camps in the dead of night, slays the merchant, and adds another bell-bearing to his collection. The Briar Armor flavour text describes his sentence and his crimes together : 'Battered iron armor from a foreign land. Worn by Elemer of the Briar. The winding, rusted iron briars are a mark of the guilty, and typically indicate a sentence of death. Elemer murdered numerous instructors and merchants, and was known as the Bell Bearing Hunter.' The briar is not decorative ; it is what his sentencers locked around him.
Where Elemer comes from is the canon's geographic Easter-egg : Eochaid, an unmapped land somewhere beyond the fog, whose battle-skills survive only in the moves Elemer practises with the sword he stole. The Marais Executioner's Sword description tells how the theft happened : 'Storied sword of House Marais, the family of executioners who presided over the Shaded Castle. Elemer of the Briar, the Bell Bearing Hunter, snatched the sword from the site of his looming execution, and furnished it with battle skills from his home of Eochaid.' Elemer was, in other words, sentenced to death by Maleigh Marais ; he killed his executioner, took his sword, and walks the Lands Between using the family weapon of the man who tried to kill him to kill the merchants who would inherit Marais's commerce.
