They are not knights and not priests : they are statuary, shaped like chimeras of dog and lion, brought to life by ritual to defend the consecrated underground. Each is decorated with a single stone eye, the watchman's eye, that was meant to remain open in vigilance forever. The graverobbers of the Lands Between, those Tarnished and human bandits who descend after Erdtree honey, gnawed-spirit bone-meal, and the heroes' weapons, have largely scratched out those eyes. The Watchdogs whose pupils are gone do not see. They still attack.
