The Erdtree Burial Watchdogs are the static, animated stone gargoyles that guard the catacombs of the Lands Between. They are not knights and not priests: they are statuary, shaped like chimeras of dog and lion, brought to life by ritual to defend the consecrated underground. Their stone greatswords are decorated with the watchman's eye, the eye that was meant to remain open in vigilance forever. The graverobbers of the Lands Between, those Tarnished and human bandits who descend into the catacombs to plunder them, have pried the pupils out of those eyes, leaving the swords hollow. The blades are picked blind; the Watchdogs still attack.

The catacombs, in the canon's view, are not just where the dead go; they are where Death is being slowly buried by an Erdtree that cannot let it surface, watched by sleepless stone bodies whose greatswords have been robbed of their eyes.
