Together, Jolán's sword and Anna's claws are as bottomless black, and penetrate the enemy's guard. Jolán and Anna were born in a cold, dark gaol, where they were raised, deprived of light, to be Swordhands of Night. Thus were they cultivated to become the most terrifying masters of their blades, though the burden of the deed left their hearts frail and pliant.' Two Swordhands of Night, born in a cold, dark gaol and raised there deprived of light. The ordination itself comes in the passive, its agent unnamed in the line: the Armor of Night is 'Bestowed upon those born deep underground, ordaining them as Swordhands of Night', and it 'Imprisons the wearer in utterly lightless dark'. Mastery and cost arrive together, held by a 'though': cultivated into the most terrifying masters of their blades, though the burden of the deed left their hearts frail and pliant.

'Spirit of a swordhand granted light by the Iris of Grace. Wields a sword of bottomless black that penetrates the enemy's guard. Though it was not by the shining star that she had longed for, thus was her Night illuminated. But this was an at times blinding light, and threatened to expunge the Night entirely.' The grant is written without a giver: she is 'granted light by the Iris of Grace'. The Iris is an incantation of the Erdtree, placed 'on the eye of another to grant them the light of grace as a fleeing blessing'; in the realm of shadow, priests of the Erdtree used it to quell the fears of their flock. The pair's ash says 'one of them being possessed by Count Ymir's doll Anna', and Ymir's dialogue places Anna as the younger: 'It's no surprise her little sister too, has a heart of gold.' Jolán states her own allegiance, 'I am Jolán. … Loyal to Count Ymir', and says of that meeting, 'Our meeting with the Count taught us of the star-draped sky.' Summoned together, her sword and Anna's claws come up bottomless black, under a light written as threatening to expunge her Night.
