The Long March of the Tarnished

Godfrey's exile-and-conquest, the Tarnished's foundational journey before they were Tarnished

'Weapon of Godfrey, Elden Lord. It was broken in a battle fought as leader of the Tarnished during the Long March. This weapon is symbolic of Godfrey's vow to conduct himself as a lord, later becoming an emblem of the golden lineage. In the days of the past, a crown was warranted with strength.' The Long March is the canon's foundational journey. After Godfrey lost his grace and was stripped of his Elden-Lord title, Marika ordained that he and his kinfolk should leave the Lands Between and 'wage war in a land afar.' That campaign, through nameless peaks and shores beyond the Sea of Fog, is what the canon calls the Long March. Godfrey was its leader. His axe was broken in the canonical battle that ended the journey, after which he divested himself of kingship and became Hoarah Loux, a simple warrior, again.

'Battlewear fashioned from leather armor adorned with a large sheet of cloth. Garb worn by warriors of the frigid uplands. The red cloth signifies participation in the Long March long, long ago and this ceremonial garb beseeches the favor of the Warrior King who led them.' The Brave's Battlewear is the March's surviving uniform. The red cloth, draped over leather, is the canonical badge of every warrior who marched with Godfrey and survived to return to the Lands Between when the Two Fingers' grace called the Tarnished home. The warriors of the frigid uplands, the Mountaintops' free chieftains, untethered to any demigod, wear it still in his memory. The Long March produced both the Tarnished as a class and the Hoarah Loux name as the canon's quietest revision : the Lord who returned was not the Lord who left.
