The avatars, emerging in the wake of the Elden Ring's shattering, were determined to protect the withering Erdtree's offshoots.' The Minor Erdtrees are smaller, regional saplings of the great Erdtree, scattered across the Lands Between : in Limgrave, Liurnia, Caelid, Mountaintops. Each is a small node of the same gold-leafed wood, glowing softly in its grove. Before the Shattering they were unprotected and quietly venerated. After the Shattering, the Erdtree's central order failing, an entirely new kind of guardian emerged spontaneously to defend them : the Erdtree Avatars, four-legged tree-bodied beings that walk on root-feet and carry the broad ceremonial staff.

The power of this weapon scales greatly with dexterity.' The Avatars are the canon's quiet evidence that the Erdtree itself is responding to its own injury. They were not summoned by Marika or Radagon. They came up out of the soil at each minor sapling, fully-formed, intent on a defence the central tree could no longer mount. In Caelid, the Minor Erdtree's avatar is heavily rotted ; its staff seeps red. In Liurnia, the avatar is intact. In each grove, the gift to the Tarnished who kills the avatar is a Sacred Tear that fortifies the Wondrous Physick. The Erdtree, dying, gives its blood as healing only to whoever proves they don't need it.
