The Nox are the canon's exiled astrologers, a civilization that, in the age before the Erdtree, dared to forge a god of their own making rather than wait on the Greater Will's distant condescension. The Greater Will sent down Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, who tore through their sky and broke their cities ; the survivors were buried under the earth as Nokron and Nokstella, where they still live, beneath a fabricated firmament.
'Helm fashioned from a crystal looking-glass. One among the Eternal City's ritual implements. Easily broken and weak against striking attacks. Worn by those committed to high treason, it wards off the intervention of the Greater Will and its vassal Fingers.' The Nox Mirrorhelm is the technical attestation of their rebellion : the helm of crystal that wards off the Two Fingers' surveillance, worn by anyone planning treason against the Greater Will. War Counselor Iji wears one in his service to Ranni for the same reason. The Nox themselves, in their underground cities, wear them as ordinary monastic dress. The crystal mirrors are their grace's substitute. The Lord of Night they await is the unborn god they were planning to forge before the Greater Will struck them down. Ranni, in the canon's quietest payoff, becomes that lord.
