Varré is the first NPC the Tarnished meets after waking in the Stranded Graveyard, a polite, bowing man in a faintly grinning white mask who congratulates the new arrival on grace, then mocks them for being maidenless. The mask the canon assigns him is a war-surgeon's : these were field-physicians whose discretion to administer mercy-killings to the unsalvageable made them the army's quiet executioners. Mohg's curse turned the mask's grace from mercy to bloodletting.

After enough taunts, he offers the Tarnished a vial of festering blood and a Recusant Finger, in exchange for invading three other Tarnished's worlds and dipping the vial in their blood. Each invasion is a small bloody offering at the foot of Mohg's cocoon. Once the vial is full, Mohg's Shackle and the Lord of Blood's Exultation become the Tarnished's reward, and Varré's quest, the canon's quietest mass murder, has been served. The Tarnished can refuse him, kill him, return the polite mockery he opened the conversation with.
