He had been driven out and robbed by the demi-humans of his own tribe in the Coastal Cave, who took the one thing he owned: his mother's sewing needle. She was a seamstress; the needle is the only keepsake he has of her, and his dream is to sew as she did. When the Tarnished recovers the needle from the cave, Boc begins following from grace to grace across the Lands Between, altering armour for the lord he has chosen to serve.

Convinced his form is ugly, he can be sent to Rennala for rebirth with a Larval Tear, and the rebirth leaves the demi-human dying in his new body, calling for his mother. The canon's gentlest ending is the alternative: through the Prattling Pate 'You're beautiful', Boc hears the words in what he takes for his mother's voice, asks the Tarnished if he truly is, and weeps with relief, a seamster who stays exactly as he was made.
