The Fingercreepers are the canon's quietest, most distressing lineage: great hand-shaped creatures that crawl on their finger-tips through ruined chapels and underground basins, each as long as a horse. The Ringed Finger flavour text records their distant origin without ornament: 'Bludgeon made of an enormous finger sheathed in several heavy rings. Thought to have been cut from an ancestor of the Fingercreeper. Some life yet remains in this legacy of an ancient act of blasphemy, as evidenced by the barely perceptible warmth it still exudes.' What blasphemy made the first Fingercreeper is not stated.
The DLC reveals their lineage's deeper secret. The Remembrance of the Mother of Fingers names Metyr as 'the mother of all Two Fingers and Fingercreepers', meaning the Two Fingers (the chapel-housed messengers of the Greater Will) and the Fingercreepers (their feral cousins) come from the same parent. Yet the nature of the blasphemy itself is never given; the Staff of the Great Beyond says only that Metyr 'received signs from the Greater Will' and that, 'Despite being broken and abandoned, she kept waiting for another message to come.' One can read the Two Fingers as the branch that grew into oracles and the Fingercreepers as the branch that stayed feral, but that is a reading: the canon states only the shared mother. The Fingercreeper Ashes that the Tarnished can summon are 'a young, diminutive Fingercreeper that eagerly restores HP, they are ever so fond of their mothers at this tender age.' The smallest Fingercreepers, the canon notes, still recognise a mother. The largest no longer do.
