The Commoners of the Lands Between

Tarnished-by-association, Erdtree-worshipping townsfolk left out of every coronation

'Garb with a modest cloth cape attached. Standard wear for commoners of the Lands Between. The board hung from the neck depicts a sprawling tree, its roots and branches forming two holes. This is a self-imposed shackle, a voluntary display of allegiance to the Erdtree that increases faith.' The Commoners are the canon's silent majority: the everyday people of the Lands Between who are NOT Tarnished, NOT demigods, NOT knights or sorcerers. Their garb is plain. Their religion is the Erdtree. Their token of identification is a small wooden board hung from the neck, painted with the Erdtree's image, a self-imposed shackle, the description specifies, a voluntary display of allegiance to the Erdtree worn by a non-noble lay-believer. By the canon's late stages, the Commoner's Headband itself admits that 'there are no commoners remaining with their wits about them', almost every Commoner the Tarnished encounters is dead, fleeing, or driven mad.

'Modest garb made of cloth. Standard wear for commoners of the Lands Between.' The Commoners' role in the canon is to make the demigod-war's body-count visible. The Tarnished walks past empty villages, passes under hanging bodies in Stormveil's gallows, sees nomadic merchant lines on the roads. Roderika, expatriated royalty per her Crimson Hood, crossed a land whose commoners had already vanished. Diallos, the broken-hearted nobleman, sought his servant Lanya, whom he found slain by the recusants in Liurnia. Boc the Seamster, a Demi-Human whose mum was a seamstress, remembers that she was always the only one who called him beautiful, words the Tarnished can let him hear once more through a Prattling Pate. The world the demigods broke is the world the Commoners had been quietly tending.
