◈ CHARACTER

Fia, Deathbed Companion

Guardian of Those Who Live in Death

"Disturb not the Death of Godwyn, the exalted. For I am the companion of Godwyn, Prince of Death. I will soon lay with Godwyn. I choose to lie with Godwyn of my own will."

The deathbed companion

Fia is a Deathbed Companion, a sacred role in her homeland where a woman receives the life-warmth and vital energy of living champions, then lies with the remains of a noble departed to offer them a second chance at life. She was awakened by the guidance of grace and driven from her homeland before she could complete this rite. At Roundtable Hold, she embraces players to receive their warmth (explaining the 5% max HP debuff) while granting them a Baldachin's Blessing. Her true mission: recover both halves of the Hallowbrand (the half-wheel millipede mark imprinted on Godwyn's flesh), one found at Roundtable Hold, the other delivered by the player. Once reunited, she descended into the Deeproot Depths to lie with Godwyn's body and conceive the Rune of the Death-Prince, a mythic child destined to be the Lord of the Deathless, future Elden Lord for those who live in death.

Her conflict with D (Hunter of the Dead) is direct: D's twin brother was killed by Fia as part of her quest, and D executes vengeance by killing Fia in the room adjacent to the Elden Throne. Rogier learns of Fia's death and cannot face it. Dying, she sends a message: "I am Fia, Deathbed Companion. Hark, Roundtable. Disturb not the death of Godwyn the Exalted. We, who live humbly in death, live awaiting our Lord." Her Deathbed Charm, given to the player, is described as "the warmth I received from the champions." Those Who Live in Death whom she protects are souls condemned by a flaw in the Order, beings without fault, living in death by cosmic accident rather than sin.

My mistress sent me off on an errand... But I was accosted by a ruffian, and now I'm in a bind. Could I ask you lend a hand, perhaps? That thug made off with a precious necklace.

Greetings, great champion called by grace. I am Fia. Circumstances have compelled my stay at the Roundtable Hold. Great champion, would you allow me to hold you, but briefly? Then good day to you, my dear. I was known as a Deathbed Companion, where I come from. After I received the warmth and lifely vigour from a number of champions, I lay with the remains of an exalted noble, to grant him another chance at life. To do so is the purpose of my being. Pray, be kind. Despite all that, I still wish to be a Deathbed Companion. So please, let me hold you like this, as often as it takes. My dear... But It wouldn't be right to give this to him, stuck as he is in the Roundtable Hold. Perhaps you could make use of it? Fia, Deathbed Companion Finally, it is returned to its rightful place. The stolen hallowbrand, of the exalted noble. And now, I must bid you goodbye as well. Though I ask you deliver this message to the Roundtable Hold. I am Fia, Deathbed Companion. Hark, Roundtable. Disturb not the Death of Godwyn, the exalted. Who will inherit your warmth, too. What greater blessing could there be, but to be born a Deathbed Companion? Have you ever seen a hallowbrand? When the first of the demigods died, his flesh was marked with the half-wheel wound of the centipede.
