◈ SPECTRAL STEED

Torrent, the Spectral Steed

The bell-belled goat-mount of grace, given by Melina at the maiden's request

'A delicate goldwork ring. Can be used as a finger whistle. Sound the whistle to summon and ride Torrent, the spectral steed.' Torrent is unique. There is exactly one of him in the canon, and he is given to the Tarnished by Melina at her first appearance, before any maiden of the Erdtree has been chosen. He is a horned goat-like steed, shaggy and bell-strung, capable of double-jumping into the air to catch the spirit-springs scattered across the world. He was, the dialogue suggests, a maiden's mount before he was the Tarnished's. 'You think this is the one, Torrent? Is that him, Torrent? Is that her, Torrent?' Melina speaks to him as one speaks to an old companion who has watched many people fail.

Torrent dies, briefly, when the Tarnished must cross the boiling air of the Forge of the Giants ; Melina sacrifices herself there to set the Erdtree alight. He is afterward returned to the Tarnished without explanation, except that the spectral steed whistle still rings. Across the canon's possible endings he is the only companion who survives every path ; the only character whose loyalty does not bend depending on which lord the Tarnished crowns. 'It's not too late.' Melina says it about the player. Torrent, who was hers, knows what she means.

NPC DialogueRanni as Renna

[First Meeting (as Renna)] A pleasure to meet thee, Tarnished. I am the witch Renna. I'd heard tell of a Tarnished hurtling about atop a spectral steed, and so I had to come and see for myself.
