The forge of the flame of ruin is said to be found upon the peaks of the Mountaintops of the Giants, far above the clouds. Gideon places the Great Forge on 'the highest peak in the Lands Between', while the map of the eastern Mountaintops has that summit overlooking 'even the Flame Peak to the south'. The game does not describe the forge's shape. On those mountaintops grows the Fire Blossom, 'half-ashen and smoldering', fertilized by the sparks from the forge. Its fire is the Giants' Flame, 'capable of burning the Erdtree'. Godfrey led the War against the Giants; the monument records how it ended: 'Fire vanquished, the era of the Erdtree begins.' The Fire Giant is 'a survivor' of that war, cursed by Marika when she realized the flames of their forge would never die. The blaze was then sealed, and guardians appointed to watch over it.

Melina's purpose was given to her by her mother inside the Erdtree, long ago; the game does not name that mother. She was born at the foot of the Erdtree, and lives 'burned and bodiless'. She asks the Tarnished to journey with her to the flame of ruin so that she can set the Erdtree aflame, and asks them to think not of the kindling: she will see to it, 'a purpose which I choose to fulfil', regardless of her mother's designs. Gideon names the price: 'a sacrifice' is needed, 'of one who envisions the flame' and can lead the Tarnished to the Rune of Death. Enia names the cost: burning the Erdtree is 'the first cardinal sin', and 'doing so will unbind Destined Death'. Inherit the frenzied flame instead, and the accord ends; the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending closes on a promise to deliver that lord 'Destined Death'.
