The Mausoleum Knights endlessly guard the Wandering Mausoleums, the great tombs that prowl the Lands Between. The mausoleum is itself the resting place: the Mausoleum Soldier Ashes call it 'where the bodies of soulless demigods are lain to rest', the Eclipse Crest Heater Shield names 'the Wandering Mausoleum where the soulless demigods slumber', and a line of in-game dialogue is blunter still: 'The mausoleum prowls. Cradling the soulless demigod.' The knights' condition is their own doing. The Mausoleum Knight Armor states it plainly: 'a self-inflicted curse that ties the spirits of these loyal knights to the land, having willingly beheaded themselves so that they may serve their masters in death.' The foot soldiers 'followed their masters into Death by severing their own heads from their bodies', and the Bloodsoaked Tabard carries the mark: padded cloth 'with indelible bloodstains around the neck'.

On their backs are wing-shaped ornaments that, in the Mausoleum Knight Armor's wording, 'evoke the Deathbird'. Those birds belong to a time before the Erdtree: 'in the time when there was no Erdtree, death was burned in ghostflame. Deathbirds were the keepers of that fire.' On their shields, the Eclipse Crest is given a stated function: the eclipsed sun, 'drained of color, is the protective star of soulless demigods. It aids the mausoleum knights by keeping Destined Death at bay.' Those they guard sleep within, and it is there that a remembrance may be duplicated, 'once per mausoleum'. The Mausoleum Surcoat gives the vigil its sound, depicting 'the mausoleum bell, which rings in constant mourning for the soulless demigods'. And Lhutel the Headless, who leads the mausoleum soldiers, 'sacrificed her life so that in Death she could continue to protect a soulless demigod until their revival, earning her the hero's honor of Erdtree Burial'.
