The Mausoleum Soldiers

Headless guardians of the wandering tombs of soulless demigods

'Padded cloth armor with indelible bloodstains around the neck. Worn by headless foot soldiers who endlessly guard the Wandering Mausoleum.' The Wandering Mausoleums of the Lands Between are walking, headless tombs : enormous stone shells on dragon-clawed legs, slowly migrating between Caelid, Liurnia, and the Mountaintops. Each contains the still-living body of a demigod born without a soul, children of Marika and Radagon who were never given the spark to inhabit their flesh, hidden away rather than killed. The bones inside hum. The Tarnished, by ringing the great bell, can use the bodies to duplicate Remembrances. The mausoleums permit it because the souls they were waiting for never came.

'Gauntlets worn by headless soldiers who endlessly guard the Wandering Mausoleum. Rust-worn and stained through unending conflict.' The soldiers are themselves an extension of the same loss : their own heads were severed in some ritual that was meant to mark their service eternal. Without heads they cannot be tempted by grace. They cannot pray. They cannot defect. Their commanders, the headless Mausoleum Knights with eclipse-crested shields, were originally the bodyguards of the soulless heirs and remain so, faithful past the point at which faith makes any sense. The Eclipse Crest is the same heraldry Castle Sol bears in the snow ; the cult is geographically scattered but theologically singular, a vow to defend what the Erdtree cast aside.
