Mountaintops of the Giants

Land of fire, forge of the Erdtree's burning

The Mountaintops of the Giants lie far above the clouds in the snowy north; the map of their eastern reach calls that remote, desolate summit the highest point in all the Lands Between. Here lived the Fire Giants, red of hair, keepers of the flame of ruin; in ancient times, the giants were mortal enemies of the Erdtree. They worshipped a malformed one-eyed god, an evil deity believed slain by Queen Marika, and they borrowed from that fell god's power, and were defeated all the same: Burn, O Flame! calls their keeping of the fire a solitary curse, to serve as keepers of the Flame for eternity, and says their failure released them from it. Godfrey, lord of the battlefield, led the War against the Giants at the beginning of the age of the Erdtree, and its monument records champions in battle, trolls turning traitor, fire vanquished, the era of the Erdtree begun. After the giants were quelled, the flames of their forge would not die, and Queen Marika marked a survivor of that war with a curse: 'O trifling giant, mayest thou tend thy flame for eternity.'

The Giants' Flame still smolders on the distant northern mountaintop; its ruinous blaze was sealed after the war and guardians were appointed to watch over it, the Fire Monks and the prelates who monitor it. It is to this peak, where the forge of the flame of ruin is said to be found, that Melina wishes to travel: she tells the Tarnished to think not of the kindling, that she will see to it, and asks for the journey to be made. Beyond, a land crossed east to west by a frozen river carries the route to Miquella's Haligtree, the path taken by those unchosen.
