Miquella and Malenia are both the children of a single god. As such they are both Empyreans, but suffered afflictions from birth. One was cursed with eternal childhood, and the other harbored rot within.' The Outer God of Rot is the patron of Malenia, Blade of Miquella. The canon never names her; she is invoked only in the Remembrance line and in the prayer-script of the Kindred of Rot, the swarming insect-figures who tend the rot in Caelid's wastes. Her gift is the Scarlet Rot, a bloom of red infection that spreads from any flower it touches into the very earth. Malenia is one of the Empyreans, candidates for godhood; her Empyrean nature means the Outer God of Rot was offered the seat of the Greater Will as one of many possible divine usurpations. Miquella's whole project is to undo that bond.

'A butterfly with withered, scarlet wings found in the Swamp of Aeonia... … According to myth, these butterflies were once the wings of the Goddess of Rot herself.' The Battle of Aeonia in Caelid was the moment Malenia chose to bloom her scarlet rot in self-defense against Radahn, after the duel of the Shattering proved unwinnable for either side. The bloom did not subside. Aeonia is now a permanent rot-swamp; the Cleanrot Knights wear sealed armor to walk it; the Kindred of Rot hover and chant; even the dragon Ekzykes succumbed to the rot without forgetting his hatred. The Outer God of Rot does not appear in person, but every rotted mile of Caelid is a chapel.
