Patches is the recurring opportunist Tarnished of FromSoftware transposed into Elden Ring, amiable on the surface, treacherous beneath, always coming out ahead. His recurring schemes in this game: he pushes players into traps (Murkwater Cave pit, lava pillar at Volcano Manor), then apologizes and opens a shop. His declared philosophy: "I am Patches, untethered to any cause. A nomad." He joins Volcano Manor "to see what Rykard has that's so fascinating" and out of curiosity toward Tanith ("I've never seen a woman like her... even announcing those blasphemous ambitions, she still stands with pride"). His admiration for Tanith is his only declared genuine feeling. He transfers his shop from location to location (Murkwater Cave → Scenic Isle → Raya Lucaria gates → Volcano Manor → Mountaintops) throughout the game. His probable end: a letter delivered via the player to Tanith reveals a "minor incident" ("I slipped and fell... doesn't make me a gentle man"). The Margit's Shackle purchasable from him before the Margit boss is the only direct (non-trapped) assistance he provides.
