When the Black Knives of Ranni's conspiracy struck Godwyn the Golden, the fragment of Death they bore did not finish the work. Godwyn perished in soul alone; his body, unable to die a true Death, was entombed among the roots of the Erdtree at the Deeproot Depths, where it rots still. Without escape, his death began to grow into the Erdtree itself, and slowly leaked back upward as a corruption, Deathroot, the gnarled black bark fed by the Prince of Death's ongoing un-departing. Where Deathroot touches the surface, the dead rise without minds: Those Who Live in Death.

The Greater Will banished Death from the Order, and Death, a fundamental thing, found another way back into the world through Godwyn's unfinished death. Fia the Deathbed Companion and Goldmask each leave the Tarnished a mending rune for the age to come: Fia's would restore Death to the Order; Goldmask's would instead perfect the Golden Order, its every imperfection blamed on the fickleness of the gods. The Tarnished's choice in the endgame is which of these to make irrevocable.
