Torrent is the Tarnished's spectral steed, a great two-horned goat-stag-like mount whose body is half-translucent and whose breath wreathes the cold air with light. Torrent is given to the Tarnished early, by Ranni in her Renna disguise, with a key piece of context : the Spectral Steed Whistle is delivered as 'a delicate goldwork ring. Can be used as a finger whistle. Sound the whistle to summon and ride Torrent, the spectral steed.' Critically, Renna's introduction names a 'former master' from whom the gift descends : 'I was entrusted this, for thee. By Torrent's former master.' That former master is, the canon implies, Melina herself.

Torrent's relationship to Melina is the canon's most quietly important small bond. Melina's site-of-grace dialogue, 'You think this is the one, Torrent? Is that him, Torrent? Is that her, Torrent?', is the entire reason she travels with the Tarnished : she is checking on her former companion. Renna's gift, performed at the Church of Elleh, is also Ranni's first move in a much longer plot, making sure the Tarnished she's recruiting can travel quickly enough to reach Nokron. Torrent's death, when it comes, is reversible at the cost of half a Flask of Crimson Tears ; but his summons remain finite, his body remains spectral, and his oldest master remains in the dark behind everything Melina says.
