The Tree Sentinels
"The knights of Leyndell once modelled themselves after the Tree Sentinels. Their purpose is to protect that which deserves protection, and thus the shield always comes before the sword."

The Tree Sentinels are the heaviest cavalry of the Erdtree's army, gold-plated knights on great horses, lance and halberd held in one hand, kite-shield in the other, holy gold etched into every plate of their armour. The Golden Halberd description states their order's name and weight : 'Weighty halberd forged of gold. Wielded by the Order of Tree Sentinels, heavily equipped knights. Deals holy damage. A masterfully crafted weapon that lives up to its heft, but is difficult for one of mere human strength to wield.' Mere humans do not become Tree Sentinels ; the order admits only those whom the Erdtree has already partly remade.
Their oldest weapons preserve a stranger origin. The Dragon Greatclaw flavour text records what the Tree Sentinels of the deepest lineage carry : 'Weapon said to have been whittled from the claw of a great, ancient dragon, wielded by grotesque Tree Sentinels who yet serve the Erdtree. The claw is enwreathed with lightning, and tears through the dragons' feeble descendants with ease.' The Tree Sentinels are, in other words, an order whose oldest members fought in the War of the Ancient Dragons before serving the Erdtree, they kept their dragon-claw weapons as relics. The Greatshield Talisman gives their motto : 'The knights of Leyndell once modelled themselves after the Tree Sentinels.
