Gransax's Attack on the Capital

The only time in record that Leyndell's walls have fallen

Gransax was a great ancient dragon, one of the last survivors of the pre-Erdtree era who refused to bow when Marika's army swept the sky. The Bolt of Gransax flavour text records the singular distinction his attack carries : 'A great ancient dragon, Gransax once rained calamity upon the Royal Capital, the only time in historical record that Leyndell's walls have fallen. This marked the dawn of the war against the ancient dragons.' His spear, fossilised mid-air over the Capital's ramparts, the Tarnished can still see today : a giant petrified bolt taller than the city's towers, embedded in the stone where it landed.

What followed Gransax's attack reshaped the Erdtree's defenders. The Malformed Dragon Armor description preserves the response : 'After the great ancient dragon Gransax attacked, the sentinels had an epiphany. The only way to truly protect the Erdtree was to become dragons themselves.' The misshapen Tree Sentinels, twisted, golden-armoured, dragon-imagery-clad, are the result. They still patrol the Capital's outskirts, half-dragon themselves, an order forged in the wake of an attack only one dragon ever managed to land. Gransax himself died at the foot of the Erdtree, but the war he opened didn't end : it eventually concluded with Godwyn the Golden befriending the dragon Fortissax, founding the Capital's later Ancient Dragon Cult on a treaty with the survivors.
