The Battle of Aeonia was the climactic clash of the Shattering: Malenia, Blade of Miquella, against her brother Starscourge Radahn, on the dunes of what was then eastern Caelid. The duel could not be decided by skill alone, Radahn alone among the demigods could match her, and so Malenia made a choice she had spent her life refusing.

She bloomed her Scarlet Rot. The disease the gods had named Aeonia, the Outer God of Rot, burst from her body in a single immense wave, scouring the battlefield. Radahn survived only by anchoring himself to gravity itself, but his mind was destroyed; he became the wandering corpse-eater the Tarnished later finds at the Festival. Malenia fell unconscious before victory could be claimed. From the spores left in the sand grew a new monstrous plant: Aeonia, swamp of rot, which still infects the lake at the heart of Caelid to this day.

Remembrance of Malenia, Goddess of Rot, hewn into the Erdtree. Miquella and Malenia are both the children of a single god. As such they are both Empyreans, but suffered afflictions from birth. One was cursed with eternal childhood, and the other harbored rot within.

Boss LoreMalenia's Great Rune

A Great Rune of the shardbearer Malenia. The blessing of this half-rotted rune reduces the healing power of Flask of Crimson Tears. And yet, due to the infusion of Malenia's spirit of resistance, attacks made immediately after receiving damage will partially recover HP. Malenia is daughter to Queen Marika and Radagon, and her Great Rune should have been the most sacred of all.
