When Marika ascended as the new god of the Erdtree, the Greater Will demanded the destruction of the rival flame: the eternal fire kept by the Giants of the northern peaks. Godfrey, the first Elden Lord and her consort, was sent at the head of the Tarnished armies. The war was long, the slaughter total. The Giants, ancient and slow, fell one by one until only a single survivor remained, his body itself a forge.

Marika cursed him to tend the dying ember for eternity, and the door to the Forge of the Giants was sealed. The kindling could not be reignited until a sacrifice was offered: a being who could envision the flame and lead a champion to the Rune of Death. That being was Melina, born for that purpose.
