The Land of Reeds

A foreign nation of samurai, locked in a miserable civil war

The Land of Reeds is a nation whose armour, blades and techniques all turn up in the Lands Between, worn and wielded by the Tarnished. Its recent history arrives in the text shared by the Land of Reeds Helm and the Land of Reeds Armor (Altered): 'The Land of Reeds has long been locked in a miserable civil war, during which time it has remained alienated from the cultures of its neighbors. Little wonder that the entire nation has succumbed to blood-soaked madness, or so it is said.' The unaltered Armor keeps a quieter note, its grimy outer mantle 'made from withered reeds from the warrior's birthplace': 'Perhaps its comforts extend to nostalgic thoughts of home.' Weapons the game ties by name to the country include the Uchigatana, 'wielded by the samurai from the Land of Reeds', the Wakizashi and the Great Katana, each 'unique to warriors of the Land of Reeds', the Cross-Naginata, 'a weapon of the Land of Reeds', and Eleonora's Poleblade, 'twinned naginata forged in the Land of Reeds'. Its arts carry the same stamp: Unsheathe is 'skill of swordsmen from the Land of Reeds', Seppuku 'a forbidden technique used by swordsmen from the Land of Reeds'. Piercing Fang the game credits to a man rather than a country: 'skill used by Yura, the Bloody Finger Hunter'.

The blades reach the Lands Between in different hands, and the game places their bearers differently. Okina is 'swordsman from the Land of Reeds', and his mask is 'the source of the sobriquet of the great swordsman of the Land of Reeds': he 'renounced it all, and rose to a higher plane. There was only himself. His katana. And its mastery. Before long, Okina became a demon of a swordsman.' His head disciples, the Inaba of the White Reeds, 'traveled in pursuit of not only the master who abandoned them, but also proper deaths, won honorably through hard-fought combat.' Eleonora's poleblade is 'forged in the Land of Reeds', though her own text judges conduct rather than country: her onslaught 'was likened to a whirlwind, but now her legacy is stained by accursed blood', and Yura, who hunts her, still calls her 'a proud knight' in spite of her 'cessblood zealotry'. The game does not say where Yura was born; his Nagakiba is the 'signature weapon of Yura, hunter of Bloody Fingers', and his iron kasa is 'crafted to imitate the woven straw hats worn in the Land of Reeds'. What befalls him is dispossession, not disguise: Shabriri wears his armour and says 'he is dead', and 'as for his flesh, he gave it to me, Shabriri'. Mohg, having 'first felt Okina's sword, and madness, upon his flesh', answered with an offer rather than a seizure: 'he had a proposal, to offer Okina the life of a demon, whose thirst would never go unsated.' The game does not say how any of these blades reached the Lands Between, nor whether the miserable civil war has ended.
