The Haligtree, Failed Erdtree
The Haligtree is Miquella's parallel project, an attempt to grow a second Erdtree, free of Marika's order, away from the Greater Will's gaze, where every outcast the Erdtree's grace had spurned could find sanctuary. Miquella planted it in the frozen heights at the world's northern edge, beyond the Consecrated Snowfield. The Haligtree Crest Surcoat description records the price he paid : 'The surcoat bears the crest of the Haligtree. Though watered with Miquella's own blood since it was a sapling, the Haligtree ultimately failed to grow into an Erdtree.' Miquella bled into its roots from his earliest years and could not coax it past sapling-ish height.
Its fall is the canon's quietest tragedy. When Mohg invaded, the Mohgwyn Dynasty's kidnapping of Miquella from the Haligtree's heart, the tree's protectors were Malenia and her Cleanrot Knights. Malenia's defeat, the Scarlet Rot bloom that followed, infected the Haligtree itself. The Haligtree Soldier Ashes preserves the soldiers' final commitment : 'Spirits of common soldiers who carry the sacred light. When weakened, they explode to deliver a last-ditch attack. This was the bitter revelation discovered by the desperate soldiers who awaited the return of their lord to the rotted Haligtree. May the flash of our deaths guide him home.' The soldiers blow themselves up to mark Miquella's path back. Miquella never came. The Tarnished, climbing through Elphael at the Haligtree's roots, walks past the bombs that were lit for someone else's homecoming.
